Rene Char by Adam Aitken (Australia)

The you of isolated fate

of unknown hope

the wind that

will tear us all

from the foreseeable

or drive us down

to the unformed.

What saves us

from this

misuse of our own words

enough that goodwill

might lead us

to the clearing

to sleep

on a ground

that never sleeps

and to know

death's direction

or to name

what one finds

on the riverbank.

Spirit that engraves itself.
